Museum of Awards

Each year we hold a nationwide competition to encourage creative writing and give emerging writers a platform to showcase their work. Explore our Museum of Awards to learn more on our previous competitions.

2008

The second annual Muslim Writers Awards 2008 took place on Saturday 29th March 2008 at the ICC in Birmingham, and attracted support from the Prime Minister, local government and celebrity advocates like James Caan (BBC Dragon’s Den). The awards ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi and guest of honour Jermaine Jackson – eight awards were handed out to deserving winners, following a review of 10,000 entries by a panel of independent judges.

2009

Now adopted as a Muslim Hands project, 2009’s ceremony moved to the capital to be hosted by Shelina Zahra Janmohamed and Hasan Mahamdallie at the Park Lane Hilton. MWA welcomed the support of the UK Government, the US Embassy and Penguin publishers, amongst others. The ceremony was broadcast live to millions of home around the world through the media partner Islam Channel. Entertainment was provided by a theatrical play, an eclectic combination of the flute and beatboxing and spoken word from world renowned performers including Warsan Shire, Dreadlockalien and Def Jam poet Amir Sulaiman.

2010

Excited by the creativity and imagination displayed by the younger writers, their work not only demanded celebrating but also development. In 2010 the Young Muslim Writers Awards was set up to focus on nurturing writers under the age of 16. The competition was launched with the support of the Institute of English Studies, University of London and the ceremony held in May of that year.
